I enjoy working with runners of all abilities to help them accomplish their goals.
I am a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Level II Certified Adult Distance Running Coach and Level II Certified Youth Coach and USA Track & Field (USATF) Level I Track & Field Coach and a lifelong learner who enjoys expanding his knowledge base. I regularly read books and listen to podcasts focused on running, training philosophy, exercise science, and sports nutrition. I have completed numerous half marathons, marathons, and ultramarathons.. I have personal experience with heart-rate based and power-based training, and I recognize the advantages and pitfalls of GPS smartwatches and emerging technologies.
I particularly enjoy working with runners/athletes who are looking to tackle a new race distance or challenge themself in a new way.
The choice of coach is an important decision, and the athlete-coach relationship should be a good fit. I believe in focusing on consistent, long-term improvement, enjoying the process and journey, and training in a sustainable manner that will help ensure longevity in the sport. I also believe in an individualized approach to coaching, recognizing that there is great variety in the backgrounds, schedules, support networks, and goals of various runners.
"Had a great experience with the Gold Plan and working with Coach Mike! The plan was a great fit for my schedule, helped me improve, and I felt confident and healthy going into my first marathon. Coach Mike was responsive and encouraging throughout the entire season."
"Mike is very knowledgeable about the science and best practices of running, training, fitness, and physical health in general. He is also very knowledgeable about area locations to run/train, races, organizations, and other helpful resources for training. Most importantly, Mike is a great listener and seeks to understand your background, goals, strengths, weaknesses, and motivations to craft a customized plan that best fits you. He combines his technical expertise and personal understanding of you to be very supportive. Mike is responsive and thoughtful in his communications. It was very reassuring to me that he was the one who created my training plan, reviewing my training runs, making recommendations, providing encouragement, and answering all of my many and varied questions."
